Commercial Review

Over the weekend, I was carelessly watching TV on Saturday when I encountered this humorous ad for Geico.  I'll admit it, I laughed out loud after witnessing the actors frustration while playing a game with a sloth.  Despite that this event is unrealistic, it still is very funny to the views while Geico secretly promote their company.  This ad had nothing to do with an insurance company until the end of the forty second long commercial where a narrator spoke really fast about saving money.  The intent for this ad was most likely set for young adults in need of financial protection and reached out to them with an entertaining distraction.  Double speak was highly effective in terms of portraying a game night with humans and sloths yet in reality promoting the Geico company.  These forms of ads are only effective when they capture the views attention and later connect it towards their business.  Projection and vagueness are additionally present due to the fact that the message of a sloth is unclear and we assume that living without Geico would reflect playing a game with a sloth.  These forms of unclear and misleading ads only add to the clutter of the advertising world and into the consumers lives.  Not only did I enjoy this ad but it proved the manipulation in which commercials can have on a person.  Connecting to the "Persuaders," movie in Critical Thinking, ads are taking over the world by using innocent and funny clips to publicize company products or promises.

  1. I agree that this is ad gives no insight on the actual product but still manipulates you into believing it's the best.

  2. I think its very interesting that a company would pay for a lot of ad time that only subtly promotes their product. Geico may have the strategy of familiarizing viewers with their company to increase their sales in the long run.
