Joe Keery, Ferris Bueller, and Pizza
Joe Keery who played Steve Harrington in the Netflix TV show, Stranger Things, appeared in a Domino's Pizza commercial which mimicked the 80s movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The identical set, a very similar script and the comedic aspect of the ad almost distracted the real product being shown, pizza. The classic film was meant to catch the attention of an older audience considering the time in which the movie was released. Yet the cast choice appealed to millennials today and reflected the high viewers rates. Despite the fact that the inspired idea for the ad came from a movie, the Domino's fast and efficient delivery service was behind the entire commercial. Keery preached that, "Life moves pretty fast," and one must not be held back by infuriating slow distribution of ordered food. Referring to his pizza, the actor patiently awaited his food while copying Ferris's funky dance moves, deep shower thoughts as well as narrating his thoughts out loud directly to the camera. The brand experience ultimately showed that in order to enjoy life to the fullest, one must eat Dominos pizza using their fast delivery service. The high concept of satisfaction was reflected when Keery opened the door in one of the last slides and seem relieved that his pizza had arrived so quickly. The need for attention encouraged everyday people to buy the product that celebrity Joe Keery advertised. The testimonial technique coupled with bandwagon tools showed that everyone can enjoy this pizza because a beautiful day cannot be completed without Domino's merchandise. Ultimately, Domino's Pizza used their commercials to sell a brand experience using aspects from Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Joe Keery to further connect with their consumers and viewers. Pizza which is the key component of this company was not the main idea for this ad and wasn't stressed enough as the recreation of the movie further proving this company's manipulation through commercials.

I love this commercial! Ferris Bueller's Day Off is one of my favorite movies and I thought it was so clever of Dominos to make their commercial mirror an iconic scene. While most of the ad is not focused on pizza, the story line from the movie, the storyline of the movie is perfectly tweaked to make deliver the high concept.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting how it appeals to more than one audience.
ReplyDeleteI find that so many brands use the testimonial technique. A few times a week I see some kind of celebrity or person of importance on the television selling the brand. It is super effective!
ReplyDeleteI really like how they incorporated Ferris Beuller's Day Off with this commercial. I thought it was clever and had my attention because I liked the movie they were portraying. I think when companies do this it often works out because they gain their audiences full attention.
ReplyDeleteI think the use of Ferris Bueller references in this ad is super effective in catching the attention of many audiences and making it memorable. Like Katie said, even though we weren't thinking about pizza the whole time, the use and weight of this particular high concept will make us remember the ad very well, which is definitely a success for the advertiser.
