Stranger Things Gets Stranger

The best Netflix original series can easily be awarded to the show Stranger Things which first aired in July, 2016.  It received over one hundred award nominations and has been praised all over the world.  The cast staring Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Woldhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, Sadie Sink and Noah Schnapp, has dominated the media and became famous overnight through their outstanding work for the TV show.  The show and cast's popularity has been greatly taken advantage of within the past year which most likely influenced the creation of Season 2, in October, 2017.  Within the show, views see the actors and actresses wearing "Chuck Taylor's" shoes, drinking "Coca Cola", and eating "KFC" chicken.  These are prime examples of Madison and Vine techniques which manipulate views minds by hidden advertisements delicate product placement.  This highly used concept has become one of the top four forms of persuasion in the advertising world yet few people acknowledge because of how sly it has become, further proving its success.  Eleven's strange obsession with "Eggo's" waffles is yet again another form of this tricky persuasion.  Stranger Things would never be the same without the opening scene with the four boys playing "Dungeon and Dragon's," although this is simply another advertisement for the popular board game.  These subtle products are vital for the shows income as well as exposing their viewers to the exact products the producers want them to see.

  1. This technique of advertising was so well done that the products were seemlessly incorporated into the character's everyday lives. In a way, choosing these brands also made the show seem more realistic because the character's ate the same waffles or wore the same sneakers that I do or others around me. This is a great example of how Madison and Vine benefited both the show and the brands being advertised.

  2. While watching this show, I didn't really notice the advertising at first until I really had to think about it in zero period. I feel like as viewers we just see it as part of the show and consider shows like these as almost real since these hidden ads help us relate to it so much.

  3. Although I see your point, I think after Stranger Things was rejected by somewhere between 15-20 networks, there was no way that any company was paying Stranger Things for their products to be used in their show. Rather, Stranger Things was simply acting on the trends of the 1980's when Stranger Things take place.
