Media Blog Reflection

Over the past seven weeks, I had closely studied the aspects of media within our technologically advancing society today through my media blog.  The posts I have made reflect very important topics covered within my Critical Thinking class as well as adding my own personal opinions on these controversial project.  These media blogs have allowed me study how vulnerable I once was towards commercials, advertisings, and overall digitally published materials.  Previous to this enlightening class, I fell victim towards guerrilla advertising and often purchased goods because of manipulative commercials.  These marketing companies took advantage of my emotions and I simply became another statistic in the big picture.  Unhealthy media consumption habits quickly were replaced with acceptable ways to acknowledge the expanding media market.  I feel that I have a new perspective on media considering my abilities to identify different forms of domination.  Love Marks, Madison and Vine, and the ultimate brand experience all flood my brain, substituting the mindless consumption I used to live by.  Seeing past the nasty advertising technique I can recognize how I am part of the few who do not want to be another statistic.  Narrowcasting anyone in my zero period class will be impossible considering the skills we have been taught to look past the persuasion industry.  Media literacy is the only concept keeping the human population from turning into media zombies.  The TV shows I used to watch are filled with intricate product placement and become the only things I focus on the few times I watch television programs.  It has also come to my attention that as media progressively grows today it becomes more and more difficult to escape set backs it comes with.  Miss Representation opened my eyes about the damage media has played towards impacting female roles on TV, in movies, and the news.  Women are seen as objects and praised for beauty over brains.  Rather than appreciating how far women have come in media the audience focuses on looks, size, and appearance.  I used to consume large amounts of media without skipping a heart beat yet now all I see are poor role models women are forced to portray.  Little girls growing up have no positive people to look up to and believe that finding a husband is the answer to life problems.  Media has become a puppet master while humans play the empty headed dolls.  The harm media cases clearly over powers the good yet few are able to see this.  I have had an interesting journey in which I was introduced to this reality and used this blog to record my process.  Yet this blog is a form of media and possibly is only adding to the chaotic, media filled world.  This ultimately comes to show that media follows us everywhere but it is up to us to identify and acknowledge this problem without falling victim to the marketing companies.
