The Mook
Today’s society feasts on the growing number of media outlets as forms of entertainment in their seemingly normal lives. The main stressors such as social media, television programs and the news through the form of a magazine flood the consumers lives and ultimately dominating every aspect. Marketing companies prey on these popular concepts to further promote their company or products towards a mass group of people. Seen in the documentary, “Merchants of Cool,” the teenage revenue was the most wealthy and expanding in marketing world today. Companies were constantly searching for ways to make their products better or more appealing to young adults. In response to this expanding market, companies have created a mook figure, an obnoxious and stereotypical teenage male figure. An example of this would be the TV show, “Impractical Jokers,” which has followed four lifelong friends challenge each other to complete pranks or dares. Often offensive and inappropriate actions were spotted through the half an hour long episodes despite completing its sixth season. The four men do unthinkable actions to further embarrass each other for points. The three winners then create a punishment prank for the loser who then has to walk down the street in their underwear, eat a plate of dirt covered worms or anything that the men think is amusing. Personally, I have only watched one episode which depicted the men in a crowded food court and they needed to shout obscure messages towards selected people. For example, one man Quinn was forced to propose to a stranger. These reckless adult act like teenage which further appeals to the teenage market. This TV show has a line of merchandise, worldwide tours and games that supports this company ultimately by attracts teenagers attention. These teenagers depend on their parents money to support their love for “Impractical Jokers,” which the company then thrives on. The mook figure appeals to the adolescent males because of their underdeveloped brain and interest in crude humor. By targeting teens, the mook is the key aspect of appealing to teenage boys, catching their attention and waiting for the money to roll in.

After seeking the video "Merchants of Cool" and it discussing the role of the mook and some of the defining characteristics this tv show immediately came to mind.

ReplyDeleteI think its appallithat these jokers get to benefit from fame. Most people in entertainment have to earn their careers with hard work and talent while the "mooks" of the world make it by pranking their friends and having an obnoxious charisma because it is somehow entertaining to the teenage population.
